A Brief History of the LEGO CompanyWhat started out as a small business has become one of the largest and most well-known companies in the world. Begun in 1932 by a carpenter named Ole Kirk Christiansen from Billund, Denmark, the LEGO name has become a household word for many families.After an unfortunate accident in 1924 that destroyed his workshop, carpenter Christiansen began making little wooden models of the items he made and sold. The Great Depression of 1929 wreaked havoc on business, so Christiansen felt making these models would help with marketing. It did for a time, but business and the economy being what it was at the time, Christiansen needed to do something else to bring in business. He was encouraged to make wooden toys in 1932, and began making some money from that. But the economy was still out of order, so he didn't make much from the sale of toys.He felt he needed a good name for his company, and in 1934, he held a contest to determine what it should be. It was a toss-up between Legio, to represent a legion of toys, or Lego, from two Dutch words meaning 'play well'.Christiansen began making toys out of plastic rather than wood after another accident in 1942, in which his business burned down. But plastic wasn't received well gw2 gold; most people wanted to continue to use wooden toys. He received some product samples from a company called Kiddicraft, owned by one Hilary Harry Fisher Page. These samples were plastic interlocking bricks that could be put together and then pulled apart, to be reassembled again. Christiansen and his son Godtfred created some bricks made of cellulose acetate, which interlocked like the Kiddicraft samples. In 1953 the Lego Group, as the company was called, penned the new bricks Lego Mursten, Lego Bricks.The new product needed some work, though, and the bricks were reconstructed to fit better together and offer more versatility. By 1958 they were made into the familiar shape we know.The 60s began a period of great successes for the Lego Group. In 1960 following another accident that destroyed most of the wooden toys made by the company, the Lego Group decided to stop making the toys out of wood, and just focus on making them out of plastic. Wheels were added in 1961-2, giving even more versatility to the line, and the number of bricks per set began to increase. By 1963 a safer material called ABS plastic was used to make the bricks.Lego started using motorized toys for its Lego trains in 1966. The company introduced dollhouses and figures in the 70s. This era also brought more advanced kits that included moving parts, more realistic posable figures, and space sets guild wars 2 gold. The education field was becoming more and more into the fad, and Legos became integral parts of classrooms and learning centers for early childhood development.By the time the company was fifty years old, it had expanded its toys to accommodate smaller children, and made products that were more advanced for people who preferred more technical products.
